Mando and Tessa (as a unicorn) in the most beautiful place in the World.
Tessa provided the story this painting is based on, and Tricia Waters and Diane Alters supplied source pictures.
Tessa: Here is Mando three years old. He has the biggest mouth, eyes and hair of anyone at the Colorado College Children’s Center. He has found something I have to see this very second. It’s the playground bushes which are unremarkable, but before I can tell him, he is on his hands and knees, already disappearing into the foliage. Underneath is nothing less than a forest cathedral. There is a smooth dirt basin, the knotted branches of the old bush like a throne, and the leaves coming together overhead. The light filters through and the veins glow red like stained glass.
“Tessa,” he tells me, “we found a whole new world. We have to show everyone.”
“No, I’m certain we have to keep it secret. It’s ours; there’s not room for everyone.”
“No, everyone,” he says. “It’s the most beautiful place there is.”
